The cancellation of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) 2026 following paper leak allegations has triggered confusion and anxiety among lakhs of medical aspirants across India.
Students are now asking practical questions: Will they have to pay fees again? Will the exam pattern change? Will old admit cards remain valid? Here’s what the National Testing Agency (NTA) has clarified so far.
Why was NEET UG 2026 cancelled?
The NTA officially cancelled the NEET UG 2026 examination held on May 3 due to widespread allegations of a paper leak and concerns over the integrity of the examination process.
Investigations, particularly by the Rajasthan Special Operations Group (SOG), reportedly found evidence of a “guess paper” that closely matched the actual examination paper and had allegedly circulated before the test.
According to reports, nearly 120 questions, including around 90 in Biology and 30 in Chemistry, matched the actual paper. Following inputs from law enforcement agencies, the Centre decided to cancel the exam and ordered a comprehensive probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Fee payment?
No. The NTA has clarified that no additional examination fee will be charged for the re-test.
Fee refunded?
Yes. The agency said the examination fees already paid by students will be refunded.
Registration?
No. The NTA has clarified that registration details, candidature data and examination centres selected during the May 2026 cycle will remain valid for the re-examination.
Students will not be required to submit fresh application forms.
Syllabus?
No major change is expected. The re-examination will be conducted on the basis of the same NEET UG 2026 syllabus already notified earlier.
Since the re-test falls within the same admission cycle, authorities are unlikely to alter the syllabus midway.
Exam pattern?
The overall pattern is expected to remain unchanged, including:
Same subjects
Same marking scheme
Same duration
Same number of questions
However, the NTA may introduce stricter security measures, including enhanced biometric verification, tighter frisking, earlier reporting timings, stronger surveillance at centres and revised paper distribution protocols.
Admit cards?
Fresh admit cards will be issued for the re-examination. The previous admit cards issued for the May 3 exam will no longer remain valid.
Re-exam ?
The NTA has said fresh dates for the re-examination will be announced soon through official channels.
Counselling be delayed?
Most likely, yes.
A nationwide re-examination means the entire admission timeline — including answer keys, results, merit lists and counselling schedules — is expected to be pushed back.

Private medical college admissions
The revised academic calendar will largely depend on how quickly the re-exam is conducted and evaluated.
