Voters cast their ballots today in a contest seen as a crucial test of PH’s grip on the state and the effectiveness of BN-PN cooperation
SEREMBAN:More than 850,000 voters across Negeri Sembilan head to the polls today in a pivotal state election that will determine not only who governs the state for the next five years but could also offer the clearest indication yet of Malaysia’s evolving political landscape following last month’s Johor polls.
After a fortnight of hard-fought campaigning, 859,760 registered voters, including 7,391 postal voters, will cast their ballots across 401 polling centres and 1,668 streams in contests spanning all 36 state constituencies.
Polling begins at 8am and closes at 6pm, with the Election Commission targeting a voter turnout of between 72% and 75%. The first results are expected from about 10pm, with the overall outcome likely to be known before midnight.
Unlike Johor, where Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) contested separately while BN and Perikatan Nasional (PN) forged seat arrangements in selected constituencies, today’s contest is expected to provide a clearer measure of whether cooperation between BN and PN can translate into votes beyond Johor.
The outcome is also expected to gauge whether PH can retain public confidence after serving two consecutive terms in the state.
PH, led by caretaker Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, is defending its administration and is seeking to improve on the 17 seats it won in the 2023 state election.
BN, which secured 14 seats previously, and PN, which won five, are hoping their electoral understanding will be enough to deny PH another term in office.
A total of 103 candidates are in the fray, including representatives from PH, BN, Bersatu, PN, Berjasa, Parti Orang Asli Malaysia (ASLI), Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), as well as four independents.
Of the 36 seats, 22 will see three-cornered contests, 11 are straight fights, while two constituencies each feature four- and five-cornered battles.
Political observers are also watching whether the election result will influence momentum heading into the next round of state polls, particularly in Malacca, while shaping calculations for the timing of the next general election.
Last Tuesday’s early voting recorded a turnout of 91.06 per cent, with 14,995 military and police personnel, together with their spouses, casting their ballots.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department has forecast generally fair weather across most parts of the state this morning, although thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected in many areas later in the afternoon.
