The political crisis brewing in Negeri Sembilan is rapidly escalating into one of the most serious tests yet for Malaysia’s fragile unity government, after Anthony Loke Siew Fook publicly urged for the state assembly to be dissolved so that the people can decide the next government through a fresh mandate.
The call came after all 14 Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblymen in the state withdrew support for Menteri Besar Datuk Aminuddin Harun, throwing the political stability of the state into uncertainty and exposing widening fractures within the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional alliance.
Loke described the current situation as “untenable,” warning that the state government can no longer function with confidence and trust severely damaged between coalition partners. According to him, dissolving the assembly and allowing fresh elections is the cleanest and most democratic solution rather than waiting for a no-confidence motion or state budget defeat when the legislative assembly reconvenes.
His statement also signals that Pakatan Harapan is no longer willing to depend on fragile political arrangements that could collapse at any moment. The Seremban MP stressed that while BN assemblymen may currently claim to support the state administration again following intervention from Umno’s central leadership, the sudden withdrawal of support has already shattered political trust.
The political drama intensified further after Dato' Seri Mohamad Hasan - better known as Tok Mat - also suggested dissolving the assembly as the best path forward. The Umno deputy president admitted that Aminuddin had effectively lost the confidence of the majority and argued that the people should once again determine who deserves to govern the state.
In many ways, the crisis mirrors the instability that has haunted Malaysian politics since the infamous Sheraton Move, where shifting alliances, defections, and political manoeuvring repeatedly overturned electoral mandates. While Pakatan managed to survive in Negeri Sembilan during that turbulent period with only 20 seats, the latest fallout suggests that old political wounds have never truly healed.
Loke’s proposal to dissolve the assembly simultaneously with the upcoming Johor state election could also transform the political battle into a major referendum on the future of the unity government itself. After Johor BN announced plans to contest all seats independently, Pakatan has now signalled it may respond in the same manner in Negeri Sembilan.
Such developments could potentially ignite a broader political confrontation between former allies across multiple states, threatening the stability of cooperation between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional at the federal level.
Negeri Sembilan crisis is no longer merely about Aminuddin’s leadership. Instead, it reflects growing distrust between coalition partners who entered the unity government out of necessity rather than genuine ideological alignment.
At the same time, Loke also dismissed speculation that Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) may seek cooperation with Pakatan Harapan following tensions with Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS). He reminded the public that DAP had previously worked with Bersatu only to feel betrayed after the collapse of the Pakatan government in 2020.
His remarks suggest that despite growing instability within the opposition bloc, old political scars continue to shape current alliances and distrust remains deeply entrenched across Malaysia’s political landscape.
As Negeri Sembilan inches closer to a possible snap election, the state may now become the next major battleground that determines whether Malaysia’s unity government can survive mounting internal fractures - or whether another political realignment is already beginning to take shape behind the scenes.
