BANGI: Teachers who are undisciplined and perform poorly should not have the privilege of being promoted based on the duration of their employment, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Speaking at the National Union of the Teaching Profession’s (NUTP) golden jubilee celebration here today, Anwar said the government would revoke the privilege for such teachers.
“I want to cancel this privilege for those whose discipline is weak and who are absent much of the year.
“I agree with the principle (of promotion based on tenure), but not for negligent and undisciplined teachers.

Currently, teachers under the education ministry are afforded time-based promotions after three to eight years, depending on their appointment grades.
NUTP president Aminuddin Awang voiced his support for Anwar’s call, saying time-based promotions take teacher performance into consideration as well.
“We do not want teachers without quality to get the same promotions as those who have worked hard,” he said.
