KOTA BARU – New settlements, equipped with better facilities, will be provided to the Orang Asli communities affected by the Nenggiri Dam project in Gua Musang.

Kelantan Menteri Besar, Datuk Ahmad Yakob, said that a total of 30 engagement sessions were held by the state government with the Orang Asli communities, such as those residing at Pos Tohoi and Pos Pulat.

“Among the benefits obtained by them (Orang Asli) include better new settlements, with public facilities provided, as well as the opportunity to cultivate rubber in the new area,” he said.

He said this in his reply to a supplementary question from Abdul Rahman Yunus (Pasir Tumboh-PAS) on the benefits of the Nenggiri dam project to the Orang Asli population, during the state assembly sitting in Kota Darulnaim, today.

The construction of the Nenggiri hydroelectric dam in Gua Musang is based on three main goals, namely electricity generation, flood mitigation and clean water, as well as for ecotourism purposes.

The RM5 billion project is expected to start generating electricity in mid-2027, and will increase renewable energy electricity capacity in Peninsular Malaysia, thus acting as a key driver of the country’s energy industry transition and strengthening efforts to ensure stable and reliable electricity supply for the people and the country. – Bernama, July 18, 2022
