KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 - At least 332 people were killed in devastating floods after the Bhote Koshi River overflowed in Nepal’s Rasuwa district yesterday.
The Kathmandu Post reported that more than 800 others, including hundreds of foreign tourists, remain unaccounted for as search and rescue operations continue.
Nepal Police spokesman Abi Narayan Kafle confirmed the latest death toll as of 3.50pm today, with Chitwan recording the highest number of fatalities at 121.
This was followed by Nawalparasi East with 74 deaths; Dhading and Gorkha with 29 each; Nuwakot with 28; Tanahun with 19; Rasuwa with 17; and Nawalparasi West with 15.
“Police and other security agencies are continuing search and rescue operations in the flood-affected districts, while evacuating families from areas at risk of further flooding.
“They are also working with local authorities and residents to search for missing people and to clear roads blocked by debris,” he said.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority's latest report, at least 826 people remain unaccounted for, including residents, security personnel, and domestic and foreign tourists.
They include 44 Nepali Army personnel, 28 Nepal Police personnel, and 13 members of the Armed Police Force Nepal.
Another 644 are tourists, comprising 517 foreign nationals and 127 Nepalis.
Meanwhile, hundreds of people have gathered at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj to search for relatives who have been unaccounted for since the flood swept through the Bhotekoshi river system.
Authorities have set up desks at the hospital to record details of the missing and posted lists of those admitted, along with photographs of the dead, to help families locate their relatives.
