AT least 95 people have been killed, and hundreds of tourists are missing after devastating flash floods and mudslides hit the Nepal-Tibet border, the BBC reported today.
The missing tourists include more than 100 people from India, 47 American tourists, 33 British nationals and 17 Malaysians, according to the Nepal Tourism Board.
The disaster-stricken area is popular among travelers and religious followers.
CCTV footage showed walls of water and mud crashing against buildings at the border crossing, as people tried to escape as the floodwaters rolled in.
In Tibet, Chinese President Xi Jinping issued a personal order, saying the incident was very serious, says the BBC's Laura Bicker in Beijing.
Nepal's foreign minister said the flash floods were believed to have been caused by an earthquake that caused a landslide.
It was Nepal's worst natural disaster since a 2015 earthquake killed 9,000 people.
Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministry said the Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu received reports from travel agencies that they had lost contact with 11 Malaysians believed to be in the district.
"The Embassy is actively coordinating with local authorities and the search and rescue teams currently being deployed by the Nepalese government to locate the affected Malaysians and ascertain their safety," the ministry said in a statement.
It advised Malaysians living in or travelling through Nepal, particularly those near the affected areas, to remain vigilant, prioritise their safety and comply with instructions from local authorities.
It also urged Malaysians to register and regularly update their contact details through the e-Konsular portal at https://ekonsular.kln.gov.my.
