If you’re currently a Netflix subscriber or are looking to become one, unfortunately there is a piece of bad news for you.

This is because the streaming company has recently revealed a new pricing list for all of its subscription plans, which will take effect immediately.

Here’s how the new rates look now

There are a total of four subscription plans that consumers can opt for, and here’s their new pricing in Malaysia:

  • Mobile Plan: RM18.90 (RM1.90 increase from RM17)
  • Basic Plan: RM29.90 (RM1.90 increase from RM28)
  • Standard Plan: RM49.90 (RM4.90 increase from RM45)
  • Premium Plan: RM62.90 (RM7.90 increase from RM55)

Out of all of the plans, the Premium Plan had the highest price increase of RM7.90. On top of that, Standard and Premium plans subscribers who want to add users outside of their household will have to pay an additional RM13 fee per user monthly.

As for Malaysians who became Netflix subscribers via the Astro bundle, they will only see the price hike come into effect from March 1, 2025 onwards.

Why the price hike?

The price hike is believed to be part of Netflix’s global strategy to maximise profits as it faces fierce competition from other streaming platforms such as Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO GO.

The last time the company announced a price change was back in February 2023, where it lowered the price of its Basic Plan from RM35 to RM28 for new and existing subscribers.

Aside from adjusting its prices, Netflix has also taken action in addressing the issue of password sharing, where it encouraged consumers to formalise account sharing by adding extra members.

However, the newly-announced price hikes could mean that Netflix is aiming to increase profit margins rather than drawing in new subscribers.
