Netflix’s new period drama makes a major change to a beloved classic

  • Netflix has released a new trailer for its upcoming series adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, which is written by Dolly Alderton and set to premiere on 3 December.
  • For the first time in a screen adaptation, the novel's famous opening line about a single man in possession of a good fortune will be spoken, delivered by Oscar-winner Olivia Colman as Mrs Bennet.
  • Show creator Dolly Alderton explained that assigning the iconic narrator's line to Mrs Bennet felt natural because the marital status and security of her daughters is her central preoccupation.
  • The cast features Emma Corrin starring as Elizabeth Bennet alongside Jack Lowden as Mr Darcy and Jamie Demetriou as the pompous suitor Mr Collins.
  • This project marks the first major screen adaptation of Austen's beloved 1813 classic since Joe Wright's Oscar-nominated 2005 feature film.
