Netflix is expanding its gaming ambitions with Unhinged, a new interactive horror game from Night School Studio, the developer behind the acclaimed Oxenfree series.
Unhinged is an immersive first-person horror game designed specifically for Netflix’s TV gaming platform. The game blends cinematic storytelling with interactive mechanics. It boasts a star-studded cast featuring Zoë Kravitz, Sadie Sink and Troy Baker.
According to Netflix, the game will take “the same amount of time you’d need to watch an episode of your favorite show”. This means the runtime is somewhere between 30 and 60 minutes.

What’s the plot of the Netflix horror game Unhinged?
Players take control of Ava, who finds herself trapped inside her apartment building during a Category 5 Hurricane-induced blackout.
Her only connection to the outside world is her best friend Claire, who lives in the apartment building just across the street. Ava and Claire can see each other from their respective windows but can communicate only through their phones.
Things are fine till Ava hears her friend’s voice. But she soon discovers that there is no way to get out of the building, as the stairwell is closed. When Claire informs her that she can see someone in her apartment, Ava realises that something terrible is happening in her building and that she is in grave danger.

How to play Unhinged on TV and phone?
This is where Netflix sets an exciting standard for games on its platform. The gameplay is fairly simple, but technologically interesting.
The ‘controller’ is your smartphone. You will have to scan a QR code to start an app that bridges your phone and the game, turning it into a 1:1 motion tracker.
While the TV serves as the primary screen, the phone in your hand acts like the phone in Ava’s hand in the game. Thus, when a call or a message comes on Ava’s phone, you answer with the real phone in your hand. While you interact with your phone, the TV will continue to boom the sounds of the game environment.
There is more. You point your phone’s flashlight to make Ava search in the dark corners of her building. Basically, your actions are mirrored by Ava.
The game has two modes: Story Mode and Standard Mode. Ava won’t die in Story Mode, allowing you to experience the game at a much more relaxed pace. In the Standard Mode, however, you must complete key missions and interactions before a timer on the screen runs out and Ava dies. Of course, you respawn at the last checkpoint, but then you have to go through the grind again.
