PETALING JAYA: The number of new Covid-19 cases dropped by 33.7% last week to 7,249, from the 10,937 recorded the week before, says health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

In his update for the week ending Dec 17, Noor Hisham said the number of Covid-19 patients admitted to public hospitals under Category 1 and 2 decreased by 28.6% per 100,000 from the preceding week, while Category 3, 4 and 5 patients dropped by 31%.

Overall bed occupancy for non-critical beds went down by 6% while utilisation of intensive care unit (ICU) beds decreased by 7%.

Active cases decreased during the week by 19.3% to 16,895.

“Recoveries dropped by 30.3% from 14,816 to 10,330,” Noor Hisham said.

“The number of deaths reported as of Saturday was 47, up from 43 the week before, bringing the cumulative figure for fatalities to 36,800.”

He said a total of 5,017,016 Covid-19 cases have been recorded in the country since January 2020
