New Covid-19 cases up 23.4% to 26,355 last week

PETALING JAYA: The number of new Covid-19 cases increased from 21,355 to 26,355 – or 23.4% – last week from the week before, says health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

In his update for the week ending July 16, Noor Hisham said the number of Covid-19 patients admitted to public hospitals and quarantine centres also increased.

The number of admissions rose by 33% per population of 100,000 compared with the preceding week, he said.

Overall bed occupancy for non-critical beds increased by 2% while utilisation of intensive care unit (ICU) beds rose by 3%.

Active cases rose during the week by 18.6% to 38,110.

“Recoveries rose by 16.8% from 16,379 to 19,138,” he said.

“The number of deaths increased by 2.6% from 38 to 39, bringing the cumulative figure for fatalities to 35,810.”

Noor Hisham said 4,619,045 Covid-19 cases had been recorded in the country since January 2020.
