KOTA KINABALU – The new wave of Covid-19 infections in Sabah has breached over 200 cases today after the state had hit the three-digit mark on June 17.
The state capital remains the main contributor to the daily infections, with 99 new infections – almost half of the total of 205 cases.
Penampang also recorded a threefold increase over the last 24 hours with 64 cases from 24 cases yesterday, said health authorities looking into the Covid-19 spread in Sabah.
The state’s Covid-19 spokesperson Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the number of infections was expected.
Yesterday, there were only 196 cases, said Masidi, pointing out that the numbers of daily infections have doubled in just the span of two weeks.
“The positive (Covid-19 infection) rates are also increasing with 2,588 samples showing close to 11.3% are positive compared to only 9.76% from 2,828 samples taken yesterday.
“This shows the infection is spreading at a faster rate. This may have happened because there are those who are positive but refuse to take the Covid-19 tests and continue with their daily activities.
“Such SOP breaches involving the relaxation of the social activities have made it easier for the virus to spread,” said Masidi, adding that most of the 205 new cases involve categories 1 and 2, which are mild infections. – The Vibes, July 7, 2022
