KUALA LUMPUR: From 2026, owners of electric vehicles in Malaysia will be required to pay road tax under a new tiered system, The Sun reported.
The rates, tied to motor power (kW), are expected to range from as low as RM20 to a top rate above RM850 annually.
Supporters say the scheme is fairer than the old capacity-based approach, but critics warn it may favour wealthier buyers of high-powered EVs.
Environmental and transport experts caution that without subsidies and infrastructure support, the tax structure could distort uptake.
The government hopes the change will nudge motorists toward EVs, but acceptance may depend on clear communication and balancing affordability.
