The SAIC-owned MG brand took to the internet and social media this week to tease its upcoming second-generation MG ZS subcompact crossover SUV. This is the overdue successor to the current first-gen model that has been in production since 2017.

From the teaser images released, the Sino-British marque is set to release the new ZS with a hybrid powertrain first, with sources online touting the adoption of the marque’s new Hybrid+ self-charging petrol-electric parallel hybrid setup derived from the recently launched MG3 hatch.

The Hybrid+ setup is expected to be significantly more efficient than its un-electrified predecessor and rival strongly against things like the Toyota Yaris Cross HEV. The package comprises of a 1.5-litre 4-cyl petrol mill augmented by an e-motor plus a 1.83 kWh battery pack, altogether rated at 192 HP and paired with a three-speed automatic transmission.

Critically, like its predecessor, a fully electric offshoot is set to join alongside said hybrid choice, as well as a traditional turbocharged combustion (ICE) option. This will ensure the new second-gen MG ZS continues to appeal across a broader spectrum of buyers, and its sharper new styling is set to bolster this fact as well.

There are plenty of notable traits to note form the rather revealing ‘teaser’ images featured. Key amongst which include the larger new front grille and aggressive new LED headlights flanking which – both being key hallmarks of MG’s current design ethos.

Elsewhere, the new MG ZS sees its rear end mirror the new MG3 compact hatch, albeit with different taillights. It also gets a sharper tailgate and a skid plate added into the bumper. Moreover, this hybrid will also get sporty touches like dual-tailpipes.

Expect more details and clearer images once the new second-gen MG ZS officially debuts this month on Aug 28. Following which, the subcompact crossover is set to go on sale in its core markets of Europe, the UK and Australia first, whilst other markets are set to follow suit after.

Locally, the SAIC-owned MG brand recently re-entered the local landscape earlier this year. Amongst its key initial offerings include the face-lifted first-gen MG ZS EV and the MG4 EV hatch. The firm is expected to launch more new metal sometime this month too.
