Travellers from Gurugram and the wider Delhi-NCR region heading to the scenic hills of Nainital can now look forward to faster journeys. With the start of on-site construction for the new 100-kilometer, four-lane Bareilly-Haldwani Greenfield Expressway, travel time to the foothills of Uttarakhand is set to be slashed by over three hours.

This ambitious infrastructure project is designed to transform connectivity between the National Capital Region and the Kumaon region, replacing slow, congested transit with a modern, high-speed corridor.

Project overview and key facts

A ‘Greenfield’ marvel

Unlike traditional highway projects that widen existing, bottlenecked roads, this expressway is being built on a completely fresh alignment. This controlled-access design ensures minimal interference from local traffic, allowing for consistent, high-speed travel.

Total length

Approximately 100 kilometers.

Infrastructure

A modern, divided four-lane highway with controlled access.

Project status

On-site construction work has officially commenced as of late May.

Route details and bypassing bottlenecks

The primary goal of this expressway is to provide a seamless link between Bareilly and Haldwani. By creating a direct corridor, the project will bypass traditional high-traffic zones that have long plagued travelers, including Rudrapur, Kichha, Lalkuan, Pantnagar and Baheri.

In Bareilly, the expressway will integrate directly with NH-30 and NH-24, creating an uninterrupted path that links the Delhi-NCR expressway network to the entrance of the Kumaon hills.

What this means for travellers

For those driving from Gurugram and Delhi, this project effectively removes the most frustrating segments of the journey. By avoiding the localised congestion points along the old route, commuters will be able to reach the foothills of Uttarakhand in under four hours.

Beyond the travel time savings, the expressway is expected to:

Enhance safety

Controlled access reduces the risk of accidents associated with mixed-traffic roads.

Boost the regional economy

Improved connectivity will facilitate faster logistics for local produce and industrial goods from the Pantnagar and Lalkuan industrial belts.

Support tourism

As Haldwani serves as the gateway to Nainital, Bhimtal, Ranikhet and Almora, this highway will make weekend getaways significantly more convenient for residents of north India.

With construction now under way, this expressway stands as a major step toward making the foothills of the Himalayas more accessible than ever before.
