WITH the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte expected to commence soon, a non-partisan citizens’ monitoring network was launched to monitor the proceedings.
On Monday, civil society leaders, students, lawyers and concerned citizens gathered at De La Salle University in Manila to launch “Bantay Senado,” which aims to “help ensure that the proceedings are conducted in a constitutional, fair, impartial, and transparent manner.”
Bantay Senado convenor and spokesman Prof. Cleve Arguelles said senator-judges owe it to the Filipino people to be “fair and impartial” throughout the process.
The network currently has over 350 volunteers nationwide and plans to conduct public education campaigns, community town halls, and trial monitoring activities.
