New high-speed trains to link three EU countries in travel shake-up

  • Trial runs have commenced for new high-speed rail connections linking Italy, Germany, and Austria, operated by Ferrovie dello Stato in partnership with Deutsche Bahn and ÖBB.
  • Commercial passenger services using Frecciarossa 1000 trains are scheduled to launch ahead of summer 2027 on routes between Milan, Rome, and Munich.
  • Estimated travel times will be around six-and-a-half hours between Milan and Munich, and eight-and-a-half hours between Rome and Munich.
  • Ten additional connections are planned from December 2028 to extend routes to Naples and Berlin, with further potential services to Frankfurt and Krakow.
  • FS also intends to launch high-speed rail services between Paris and London from 2029, aiming to challenge Eurostar's Channel Tunnel monopoly.
