Home minister confirms new MyKad and passport rollout on track, with existing stock used until supplies run out in months
PUTRAJAYA: The implementation and issuance of the new versions of the MyKad and the Malaysian International Passport remain on schedule, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail today.
However, he explained that new applications for both documents will continue to use existing stock for the time being, as current supplies are sufficient to meet demand for the next few months.
“I can confirm that both initiatives…the new MyKad and the new passport, remain on track.
“However, even though we are introducing new versions, it does not mean we should discard existing stock that is sufficient for another two to three months,” he told reporters after the Home Ministry’s monthly assembly here today.
Saifuddin said the remaining stock of MyKad and passports must be managed efficiently and fully utilised before the transition to the upgraded versions.
“For new identity card applications, we are still using the existing stock. For example, around 35,000 MyKad applications are submitted each month by children turning 12 years old.
“The MyKad currently being issued is based on the existing stock and contract. Once that stock is exhausted, the new initiative will be implemented,” he said.
Previously, Saifuddin announced that Malaysia would introduce redesigned versions of the MyKad and passport as part of efforts to strengthen the security features of the country’s identification documents.
