Kota Kinabalu: The Azman Hashim Gallery (GAH) is a new tourist attraction at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).
Vice Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Kasim Mansor, said apart from the works of art on display, the unique design of the GAH building is also a special attraction.
“In addition to housing high-quality works, the shape of the gallery building is a source of pride for Sabah, especially UMS, because it is one of the unique and iconic buildings and can be used as an attraction for tourists, especially art lovers.
“GAH also functions as a knowledge development centre where this gallery houses various facilities that can be used when organising arts and cultural programmes such as seminars, lectures, exhibitions, and so on.
“Our hope is to make GAH a famous art gallery not only in this region but able to be a special focus for art and culture lovers from all over the world,” he told the media after paying a courtesy visit on the Head of State, Tun Juhar Mahiruddin, at Istana Seri Kinabalu, recently.
The purpose of the visit was to invite Juhar to officiate at the opening of the Azman Hashim Gallery on June 10.
Inspired by the Gong’s design, the construction of GAH, costing RM15 million, was fully sponsored by Yayasan Azman Hashim and was completed in the middle of last year.
Also present were UMS Registrar, Luqman Ridha Anwar, Treasurer, Badrul Hisham Ismail and GAH Director, Dr. Mohammad Puad Bebit.
