KUALA LUMPUR - The Road Transport Department (JPJ) announced that starting July 1, all express and tour buses must have seatbelts installed.

According to JPJ Director-General Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, this requirement applies to buses manufactured from January 1, 2020, onward, as they are already approved for seatbelt installation.

For buses made before 2020, there will be a grace period to allow for the installation of seatbelts.

"We are currently working towards giving bus operators adequate time to fit seatbelts in passenger seats," he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian after attending the JPJ Malaysia Special Loyalty Assembly in Kota Bharu today.

He also noted the need to establish a mechanism or standard operating procedure (SOP) at the company level to ensure that both drivers and passengers wear seatbelts before the bus departs.

He said JPJ will provide guidelines to operating companies to ensure they follow this directive.

Non-compliance will result in a fine of RM300 for drivers, passengers, and the operating company.

"The use of seatbelts is a key measure to enhance road safety," he added. - June 29, 2025
