New SNP MP Lara Bird says duty is to ‘sovereign people of Scotland’ during swearing in

  • Newly elected SNP MP Lara Bird appeared to cross her fingers while swearing allegiance to King Charles in the House of Commons on Monday, 22 June.
  • Representing Arbroath and Broughty Ferry, Ms Bird stated she took the oath only to serve her constituents.
  • She declared that her first allegiance is, and always will be, to the sovereign people of Scotland.
  • Ms Bird secured her seat in a by-election last Thursday, winning with a majority of over 5,000 votes against the Conservatives.
  • She later reiterated on X that it is a privilege to serve and represent her communities as their Member of Parliament.
