Several US states have confirmed they will begin issuing Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (Summer EBT), also known as SUN Bucks, in June 2026. The program is designed to provide financial support for food purchases during the summer months when school meals are unavailable.

According to reports, eligible families can receive $120 per school-age child, although distribution schedules and payment methods differ between states. Most benefits are intended for children who received free or reduced-price school meals during the academic year.

The Summer EBT program operates alongside existing food assistance systems and is available only in participating states and territories. In many cases, households do not need to submit a separate application if they already receive qualifying benefits.

Nine States and Washington DC Confirm June Payment Schedules

Several participating states have now published guidance on when families should expect to receive benefits during summer 2026.

According to reports and attributed to state agencies, Alabama confirmed benefits will begin being sent in June 2026. California stated that payments will be divided into three installments of $40, distributed across June, July and August. Maryland will follow the same phased approach.

Connecticut said benefits are expected to be deposited in late June. Maine confirmed issuance will begin between 1 June and 15 June, while Massachusetts expects payments to arrive in early June.

New York has announced that benefit distribution will begin in June and continue through the summer period. North Dakota reported that issuance has already started, with some payments scheduled for early June. Virginia’s Department of Social Services said payments will be issued on a rolling basis beginning in June 2026.

Washington DC also confirmed June distribution for households automatically enrolled in the program, although families required to apply may receive payments later. The program generally delivers support in a single payment of $120 per child, although some states have adopted monthly instalments instead.

Eligibility Rules and How Benefits Are Distributed

Summer EBT is intended for children who meet eligibility requirements connected to school meal access or participation in public assistance programs.

According to the information reported, children may automatically qualify if they live in households receiving SNAP, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations, or Medicaid in participating states.

Students attending schools participating in the National School Lunch Program or School Breakfast Program may also qualify if household income requirements are met. Most eligible households are expected to receive benefits automatically. Families who believe they qualify but are not automatically enrolled may apply through their state’s Summer EBT application process.

Funds can be used only for approved food purchases, including fruit, vegetables, dairy products, grains, meat and poultry. The program does not permit spending on non-food items such as cleaning products, alcohol or hot prepared meals. Distribution methods vary by state. Benefits may be added directly to an existing SNAP EBT card, loaded onto a Summer EBT card previously issued, or placed onto a newly issued card sent to eligible households.
