New team deployed to Antarctica to save historic UK base from climate crisis

  • The UK Antarctic Heritage Trust has deployed a new team to Antarctica for the second year of a project to conserve Base A at Port Lockroy, Britain’s first permanent scientific base.
  • Specialists are also visiting Wordie House for the first time to conduct a comprehensive structural survey and digital mapping to protect the historic site from climate change.
  • The crew will endure sub-zero conditions without running water to install roof beams and floor props designed to help the 80-year-old building withstand heavy snow and rainfall.
  • Alongside essential repairs, team members will operate the world’s southernmost post office, museum and gift shop, while monitoring a local colony of over 1,000 gentoo penguins.
  • The recruit team includes an RAF veteran, a mountain rescue volunteer and experienced carpenters who have completed specialist Antarctic survival and environmental training.
