VMX explores the complexities of desire, intimacy and self-discovery in its latest film, “Spit or Swallow,” premiering today, Sept. 11.
Directed by Sigrid Polon, the film stars Kim Yashii as Lena, Rinoa Halili as Astra and Ghion Espinosa as Cole. At its center is Lena, a quiet and obedient college student who has spent much of her life following the expectations of the people around her.
Although curious about pleasure and intimacy, Lena’s understanding of relationships has largely been shaped by what she reads in books rather than personal experience.
That changes when she meets Cole, an older and confident man who introduces her to a relationship marked by attraction, attention and validation. What initially feels exciting, however, gradually leads Lena to question the nature of their relationship and whether the decisions she is making are genuinely her own.
Her life becomes even more complicated with the arrival of Astra, a mature and intimidating substitute professor who treats Lena differently from the people she has known. As their connection grows, Lena begins confronting feelings she has previously kept at a distance.
The developing relationships between Lena, Cole and Astra eventually become more complicated as secrets emerge and the boundaries between affection, desire and manipulation begin to blur.
For Lena, the situation becomes a journey of understanding what she truly wants — and how much she is willing to compromise in her search for love and acceptance.
Rather than focusing solely on romance, “Spit or Swallow” examines the pressure to please others and the difficulty of maintaining one’s sense of self while navigating relationships.
The film marks another collaboration between Polon and VMX. The director previously helmed VMX titles including “Kabitan” and “Eks,” as well as the Viva Movie Box microdrama “Elisa: Batang Kabit.”
