New York has begun rolling out its Summer EBT programme, offering targeted grocery assistance to eligible families during the summer school break. The initiative aims to help households cover food costs while children lose access to free or reduced-price school meals.
Summer EBT grocery payments for school holiday support
The programme provides eligible families with$120 per child, loaded onto an EBT card for use on groceries. The support is intended to reduce pressure on household budgets during the summer months, when food costs typically rise for families with school-age children.
Officials say the scheme is now in its third year and is designed to work alongside existing nutrition assistance programmes rather than replace them.
Summer EBT rollout begins across the state
Payments are beginning to be issued this week across New York State. Most eligible children are automatically enrolled, with families receiving notifications by letter, email or text message confirming their benefits.
Some households may need to apply manually if they are not automatically included. Authorities are advising families who do not receive confirmation within two weeks to check eligibility through the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) online portal.
How Summer EBT benefits are distributed
For families who previously received the benefit, funds will be automatically reloaded onto existing Summer EBT cards. Officials are encouraging households to retain their cards from previous years to ensure smooth access to payments.
The benefit is separate from SNAP assistance and must be used within 122 days, after which any unused funds will expire. Families will be notified as the deadline approaches to reduce the risk of losing remaining balances.
Security warning issued for card holders
Authorities have also warned families to take precautions against fraud. Users are being advised to change their PIN numbers due to reports of benefit theft in other states. Officials stress that securing account details is essential to protect funds once they are loaded onto the card.
Support aimed at reducing summer food pressure
Hunger Solutions New York says the Summer EBT scheme is designed to complement other food support programmes, including school meal services and community food initiatives. Families may also qualify for additional assistance such as SNAP or WIC depending on income and eligibility.
The programme is intended to help reduce food insecurity during the summer period, ensuring children continue to have access to basic nutrition support even when schools are closed.
