New Zealand is considering lowering the voting age in their country from 18-years-old to 16-years-old.
According to a report by NPR, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern shared that lawmakers there will take a vote to decide on this.
This comes hours after their Supreme Court ruled that it would be considered age discrimination to not allow 16-year-olds and 17-year-olds the opportunity to vote.
She explained that, in order to pass the legal voting age, they would need a 75% super-majority in favour of the change, adding that she personally agrees with lowering the age.
“I personally support a decrease in the voting age but it is not a matter simply for me or even the government. Any change in electoral law of this nature requires 75% of parliamentarians’ support,” she said.
Other countries that considering the same include Austria, Malta, Brazil, Cuba and Ecuador.
