A disturbing discovery in Sibu led to the arrest of a 44-year-old man and a 14-year-old girl after a newborn baby boy was found abandoned in a garbage dump along Jalan Tong Sang. The baby, who appeared to be just hours old, was found by a passerby around 8:30 am yesterday, placed in a fish storage container and in a visibly weak state.
Responding swiftly, local authorities detained the suspects yesterday afternoon following initial investigations. Sibu District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Zulkilli Suhaili, confirmed the arrests, highlighting the speed of the police’s efforts in identifying and apprehending those believed to be responsible. As per the court’s order, the man has been remanded for six days, starting today, to assist in the investigation, while details regarding the teenager’s involvement are still under examination.
According to police reports, the newborn weighed approximately 1.48 kilograms and was found with his umbilical cord still attached, indicating that he had likely been born within the previous 24 hours. He was immediately transferred to Sibu Hospital, where he is currently under medical care and reported to be in stable condition.
The police believe the arrests have resolved the immediate case, though they are urging any individuals with additional information to come forward. “The case is currently being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for concealing a birth with the intent of abandoning a child. Those found guilty under this section face up to two years in prison, a fine, or both,” stated Assistant Commissioner Zulkilli.
Police are also appealing to the public for cooperation and information related to the incident. Witnesses or individuals with relevant knowledge are encouraged to contact the Sibu Police Department at 084-364373 or reach out to Investigating Officer Inspector Ahmad Zam Zam Ismail directly at 014-9067909.
