A NEWBORN baby boy, believed to have Down syndrome, was found abandoned inside a cardboard box at a bus stop opposite Surau Batu 5 in Alai, Melaka on Friday night.
The infant, weighing 2.7 kilogrammes and with his umbilical cord still attached, was discovered by members of the public at approximately 9.20pm. Authorities confirmed that the baby was in stable condition and had no visible injuries.
Melaka Welfare Department director Halyjah Muhamad said a medical examination conducted at Hospital Melaka on Saturday confirmed the infant has Down syndrome.
Melaka police chief Deputy Commissioner Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar confirmed that a police report had been lodged and investigations are underway.
“The location was inspected by the D11 unit (Sexual, Women and Children’s Investigation Division) of the state police headquarters, but there is no closed-circuit television (CCTV) system installed nearby,” he said.
He added that, as of now, no witnesses have come forward.
