Newcastle United must pay the buyout clause to land Rennes midfielder Lovro Majer.
Newcastle and Atletico Madrid are interested in the Croatia international.
But Foot Mercato says any move away from Rennes will depend on a buyer meeting Majer's 35m buyout clause.
Rennes are refusing to consider a discount for the midfield schemer.
The French club will need to cough up a hefty slice of Majer's fee to his former club Dinamo Zagreb once he is sold.
