Newcastle United are eager to keep hold of Loris Karius.
The German goalkeeper is coming off contract at the end of the month.
The Athletic says Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has held initial talks with Karius about a new deal.
The 29 year-old has impressed Howe during his six months with the club.
But Karius is still considering alternative options.
