Newcastle United had not thought about revenge ahead of their midweek League Cup clash.

The Magpies were playing Manchester United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night at Old Trafford.

Having lost to the Red Devils in the final last year, Newcastle gained revenge by winning 3-0 at Old Trafford this week.

"That's not our emotion as I sit here now," manager Eddie Howe stated on revenge being part of the equation, when he spoke pre-match.

"Our emotion is to prepare to win the game and a win gets us to the quarter-final of the competition.

"We loved our run in it [Carabao Cup] last year and we're determined to do as well as we can, despite the fact we do have a few injuries and the squad is stretched to a degree, we'll still try and be competitive.

"It features right at the top of our priorities because it's our next game. We select a team to win and it's no different for this match. Yes, we're going to have to use our squad and we have another game against Arsenal a few days later, then Dortmund, so it would be foolish not to use the squad and that doesn't mean we don't back them to go to Old Trafford and win.

"I don't know whether it's our best chance of silverware this season, but we have a chance to get to the quarter-finals, so we're highly motivated and we've got no problem with that. The players feel the same way.

"We loved last year's experience, we want that again if we can, but we can't underestimate it. Going to Old Trafford is still one of the biggest tests in football and we're going to have to perform very, very well to go through."
