Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has revealed that captain Jamaal Lascelles has signed a contract extension.

Lascelles was expected to leave the club last summer, but chose to remain and fight for his place.

He has since played a lot more games than expected, both due to injuries to others and his own form.

Howe told reporters on Friday: "He has done incredibly well, both as a leader and captain of the group. But also as a player and his game has really developed.

"He's played an important part in the season when he's played, he's been excellent. There is good competition for places in that area now. But he is an integral part of what we are doing."

On the contract, Howe added: "Regarding his contract situation it is not unclear in my mind. I think he has a contract for next year. No (it does not expire in June). Yes (it has already been triggered)."
