Lewis Miley played as the deepest of a midfield three, while Sean Longstaff mixed in between Miley and Guimaraes.
The Magpies have been reluctant to listen to fan calls to play Guimaraes further forward.
But he did score twice in the away success, which may prompt a permanent change in tactics from Howe.
