Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe admits he's a fan of Portuguese players.

Howe was speaking after last night's Eusebio Cup defeat at Benfica.

Asked about signing players from Portugal, he stated: "It's a very strong, technical league, you can see that for Benfica. Of course we're looking in Europe and in the world, I'm not saying that we're not looking for players in this area as well."

Asked about Sporting CP midfielder Matheus Nunes, Howe continued: "I don't comment on individual players, it's disrespectful to players and clubs, we do our business in private. There are many Portuguese teams we are looking at, looking for the best."

Howe also was quizzed about Cristiano Ronaldo's future at Manchester United.

He laughed: "I hope he doesn't [stay in the Premier League]. He scores a lot of goals and I'd rather not play against him!"
