Subject of his interest was Leicester midfielder James Maddison, says ChronicleLive, who features high on the Toon's shopping list.
Newcastle bid over 50m for Maddison last summer but could not strike a deal.
Maddison will leave the Foxes, even if they beat the drop, over the close season.
