Newcastle United are eyeing a move for Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse.
Football Insider says Ward-Prowse will leave the Saints should they be relegated from the Premier League this season.
The Magpies are understood to be among several clubs who have sent scouts to watch the 28-year-old ahead of a possible move, alongside Liverpool and Manchester United.
It is thought that although Southampton will be reluctant to part ways with Ward-Prowse, a transfer fee of 40million could be enough to convince the south coast club to sanction a sale should they finish in the bottom three come May.
Newcastle may hold the upper-hand over the likes of Man United and Liverpool when it comes to negotiations due to the fact that Ward-Prowse is represented by the same agent as Nick Pope.
