Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope has spoken about the issue he had with Manchester United man Cristiano Ronaldo in their Premier League clash.

The Magpies and Red Devils played out a competitive 0-0 draw at Old Trafford in the league on Sunday.

In one incident, it appeared Newcastle had already taken a free kick, with Ronaldo taking on what he thought was a loose ball and putting it into the back of the net.

However, the referee had been holding up his hand to signal the free kick would be taken by keeper Pope, which enraged Ronaldo and other United players.

Post-game, Pope told Chronicle Live: "The free-kick was slightly in the wrong place and obviously Fabby's (Schar) rolled it back to me and walked off.

"I think you know by everyone's body language that you know he's not meaning to take a free-kick.

"I think the referee sorted it out quickly and fair play to him for making the right decision and squashed it straight away."
