Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe could have another option in midfield this season.

The Magpies have secured the signing of defender Lewis Hall from Chelsea in the past few days.

The deal is a loan with an obligation to buy, which makes Hall a Newcastle player for all intents and purposes.

The talented youngster has previously admitted he can fill in as a midfielder as well as in several defensive positions.

If I'm honest, I prefer playing in the middle of the pitch," Hall told reporters after a Man of the Match performance against Manchester City last season.

"I feel like that's where I can be most effective whether as a pivot or as an eight [but] I've played left side quite a lot. I like to have that versatility so when the manager picks a team there's different positions that you can be selected for."

"There's a lot of competition in the squad because there's a lot of really good players," Hall told Newcastle's official media channels.

"In every position you've got talented players who are trying to be in your spot. You can use that to learn off each other. I want to help the team out as much possible.

"If that means playing some games, not in others, as long as the team is winning and I'm learning as a player and progressing a person, that's all that matters to me."
