The Sun says Toon football chief Dan Ashworth made a personal check on the teen last week.
Crystal Palace and Brighton are also keen on the Blackburn youth team product.
An England U19 international, Wharton has scored one goal and produced two assists in 19 appearances across all competitions for Rovers.
Ashworth is well aware of Wharton thanks for his time with the FA.
