On a recent trip to Taylor's University, we met three students, Joanne, Yvonne, and Alicia, who plan to be content creators in Newswav.
These three young ladies were at a workshop organised jointly by Newswav and Taylor's University to encourage young writers to publish their articles on the platform and if readers happened to love their writing, they stand a chance to generate revenue to supplement their income.
Joanne tells us she hopes to share the excitement she discovered on her most recent visit to Chongqing China, while Yvonne would like to tell everyone about her favourite food and restaurants from her home state of Sarawak.
On the other hand, Alicia is bursting with energy to tell the world that she has discovered how to get Coldplay tickets without having to pay an arm and a leg to the intermediaries who are out to make extra bucks from innocent fans.
They told us that they do not know how to start or where to begin to tell their story to readers on Newswav. They looked helpless.
We told them that writing is easy if they were to talk about a subject matter that is familiar to them. When they write about things that they know well or an experience that they have been through that they feel is worth sharing.
So, the subjects they have chosen, we told them, are indeed worth sharing and appear to be what readers might find interesting and would really enjoy reading.
But then, how do we start, they asked.
For Joanne, we told her, it's easy enough. It's best to start with the impression she gets during her first encounter with the magnificent province of Chongqing. Since she has a large collection of digital photos, she could well upload these too to illustrate her travel experience.
Similarly, for Yvonne. Kuching has many restaurants that non-residents may be curious to know about, more so from someone who hails from that very city.
We told her she could begin by relating to the experience of the late Anthony Bourdain, who loved Sarawak laksa and had successfully introduced the dish to the world through his weekly cooking show known as Parts Unknown.
Perhaps she could even outdo the famous chef by introducing other dishes yet unknown to the outside world.
Meanwhile, for Alicia, she could easily start by referring to the most recent reports on how scammers are out to make money at Coldplay concert and follow it up with advice on how to recognise their scheme and end the article by showing readers where to get tickets at reasonable prices from credible dealers that they she knew.
In the next few weeks, hopefully, we will be able to read their articles on Newswav, and perhaps they might even win attractive prizes offered at the workshop that day.
Also, we hope Joanne may realise her dream of monetizing her writing and gets paid a tidy sum of around RM7k per month like one of those writers mentioned by Janice, the Business Development Manager of Newswav.
"It would help pay my tuition!" she said.
Besides financial gain we at Newswav hope that our platform will continue to be a site where students like them will upload their articles and share their videos daily and get to build a following as a starting point for a career in writing and communication.
Good luck, Joanne, Yvonne, and Alicia! We'll see you online soon!
