Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming came under fire after he enthusiastically lauded the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for adopting what he described as a zero-tolerance stance on corruption. His remarks were tied to the recent dismissal of 20 immigration officials implicated in the “counter setting” scandal, with another 227 individuals reportedly still under investigation.

Nga, who also serves as DAP deputy chairman, argued that such action reflected the Madani government’s determination to root out graft. He pointed to last year’s seizure of RM5 billion in illicit assets as further evidence that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s administration was serious about tackling entrenched corruption. He suggested that dismissing errant officers while strengthening enforcement would help foster integrity within the public service and attract greater investor confidence, moving Malaysia toward its goal of ranking among the world’s 30 least corrupt nations.

While the message was intended as a show of strength, it drew a wave of criticism for appearing to exaggerate progress and gloss over unresolved cases. Critics argued that proclaiming a culture of zero tolerance sounded hollow when many high-profile scandals had either stalled, ended without prosecution, or involved figures within the ruling coalition.

Nga’s declaration was therefore met with skepticism, with detractors viewing it as self-congratulatory and out of touch with public sentiment. They argued that public trust cannot be rebuilt through isolated dismissals or asset seizures but requires a consistent and transparent commitment to addressing corruption, including cases involving political elites.

The episode underscores the delicate position of the government as it seeks to balance political loyalty with institutional credibility. Until major breakthroughs are achieved in high-profile cases, attempts to portray the administration as uncompromising on corruption risk being dismissed as rhetoric rather than reality.
