Nga Kor Ming reiterates he is ready to quit the Cabinet if Malaysia’s judicial system integrity is compromised.
KUALA LUMPUR: Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming reiterated that he is prepared to resign from the Cabinet if the integrity of the country’s judicial system is compromised.
In a Facebook post today, he said the position was based on principle and was not linked to any personal matter.
“Referring to certain parties urging me to resign, please read my full statement during the exclusive interview with the Oriental Daily,” he said.
Nga said the remarks reflected his longstanding position as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya, that the credibility of the country’s judicial system must be upheld.
“If Datuk Seri Najib, who caused the Malaysian public to bear the RM51.4 billion 1MDB debt, can be released without serving a punishment befitting the offence despite already being found guilty, it means the credibility of the nation’s judicial system has been pawned, and the principle of the rule of law as enshrined in the Rukun Negara is also no longer respected,” he said.
He added that he was prepared to resign from the Cabinet if such a situation were to occur in order to defend the integrity of the country’s judicial system.
In the same post, Nga congratulated Barisan Nasional (BN) on its victory in the Johor state election, saying the democratic process must be respected by all parties.
He said BN’s two-thirds majority victory carried significant trust and responsibility that must be discharged with integrity.
Nga also thanked voters who supported Pakatan Harapan (PH), as well as party workers and volunteers who worked throughout the campaign, adding that the coalition remained committed to serving the people and the nation.
Yesterday, BN won 48 out of the 56 state seats contested in the Johor polls.
Meanwhile, in Ipoh, Nga declined to comment on his previous remarks when approached by reporters after presenting compassionate cash aid to storm victims in Bercham, saying his focus remained on serving the people.
“We are focusing on the well-being of the people. My heart is truly with the people. I can feel their hardship and difficulties. When I come to help, avoid all these issues (resignation issue),” he said.
Nga, who is also the DAP deputy chairman, had earlier presented RM1 million of compassionate cash aid to 554 familes affecetd by the storm in Bercham on June 19.
