NGCP extends Yellow Alert for Visayas grid

MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) on Wednesday, May 20, extended the Yellow Alert of the Visayas electricity grid as some power plants continue to remain offline.

From between 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., the NGCP said that the Visayas grid is now under Yellow Alert between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. as available supply is at 2,692 megawatts (MW) while peak demand is at 2,503 MW.

It reported that 19 plants are on forced outage, while 15 plants are running on derated capacities, for a total of 847 MW unavailable to the electricity grid.

It added that the factors that contributed to the Yellow Alert extension include the continued unavailability of Visayas' large coal plants, namely Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 1 (169 MW), Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 2 (169 MW), and Panay Energy Development Corp Unit 3 (150 MW); And also the increase in system demand by around 95 MW.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement, but does not lead to power interruptions.
