NGCP issues yellow, red alerts for Visayas, Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines —The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) put Visayas and Mindanao under yellow and red alerts as major power plants continue to be offline.

For Visayas, the yellow alert will be between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., and 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. The red alert will be between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., as peak demand is expected to reach 2,002 megawatts (MW) against the available supply of 2,320 MW.

Meanwhile, the yellow alert in Mindanao will be between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. as peak demand is estimated to reach 2,545 MW against available supply of 2,652 MW.

In the Visayas, 31 plants are on forced outage, while 14 others are running on derated capacities, for a total of 1,030.1 MW unavailable to the grid.

In Mindanao, 29 plants are on forced outage, while 7 are running on derated capacities, for a total of 859.8MW unavailable to the grid.

A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.

A yellow alert status is when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
