NGCP raises red, yellow alerts for Visayas, Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines — National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) issued yellow and red alerts in on the Visayas and Mindanao grids on Friday, as power plants continued to be unavailable in these regions.

In an advisory, NGCP said that for Visayas, the yellow alert would be in effect between 4 p.m and 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. The red alert will be in effect between 55 p.m. and 6 p.m., as peak demand is estimated to reach 2,558 megawatts (MW) against available capacity of only at 2,407 MW.

In Mindanao, NGCP said that the yellow alert would be between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. as peak demand was expected to reach 2,661 MW against an available capacity of 2,847 MW.

The NGCP said that in the Visayas, 23 plants were on forced outage, while 19 were running on derated capacities, making 606.6 MW unavailable to the grid.

Meanwhile in Mindanao, the company said that 21 plants were on forced outage there, while 3 were running on derated capacities against a total of 474.9 MW unavailable to the grid.

NGCP said the red and yellow alerts in Visayas were due mainly to the continued unavailability of the Panay Energy Development Corporation Unit 3 and KEPCO SPC Power Corporation Unit 1 plants, and the limited power imports from Mindanao due to the planned and unplanned outages of some power plants there.

In Mindanao, NGCP said the reason for the yellow alert was due to the unplanned outages of Therma South Inc. (TSI) Unit 1, and Pulangi 4 Unit 2, that coincided with the planned outages of GNPower Kauswagan Ltd. Co. Unit 4, and TSI Unit 2.

A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.

A yellow alert status is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
