Kota Kinabalu: A non-governmental organisation, Gerakan Kuasa Rakyat Malaysia (G57), has lodged a report urging police and relevant authorities to investigate whether an alleged drug cartel leader who is under custody is among funders of an opposition party’s Sepanggar division.

Its Chairman Datuk Zulkarnain Mahdar said the investigations should include whether the suspect with a title of “Dato’ Seri” funded the division during 15th General Election (GE15) and 16th State Election (PRN16).

He said this is because besides allegations that went viral in social media, he received information about the drug suspect being one of the funders.

“This unknown person also claimed that the party’s office in Alamesra belongs to the suspect,” he said, noting that leaders of the party concerned have denied the allegations.

He said they were worried what would happen to Sabah if the party wins the next State election.

There is also another serious accusation that the drug activities of the alleged suspect was rampant before the current state government was formed, he said.

Zulkarnain said the Registrar of Societies (RoS) should take action if the allegations proved true.

“Based on existing law, a political party is prohibited from receiving funds from illegal sources, including criminal activities,” he said, adding a similar report would be lodged with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Putrajaya, Selangor.
