The matter has now been listed for further hearing on August 31.

The Principal Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has sought a progress report on the protection of Delhi Ridge and the constitution of Delhi Ridge Management Board (DRMB). The matter was heard by Justice Prakash Shrivastava, Chairperson, and Justice Afroz Ahmad, Expert Member.

During the hearing, counsel appearing for the DRMB informed the tribunal that although all necessary approvals had already been obtained, the constitution process of the board was yet to be completed. It was further submitted that the first meeting of the board would take place after its formal constitution.

The tribunal held that the DRMB should be constituted and begin carrying out its assigned responsibilities as expeditiously as possible. Counsel for the Forest Department of the Delhi Government informed the tribunal that the notification relating to Phase-I of the Central Ridge had been prepared and was likely to be published shortly. The tribunal directed that the notification be placed on record immediately after publication.

Additionally, the NGT directed the respondents concerned and the DRMB to file a progress report regarding Phase-II of the Southern Ridge. The matter has now been listed for further hearing on August 31.

The Delhi Ridge is the northern extension of the ancient, 1.5-billion-year-old Aravalli Range. Spanning roughly 35 kilometers through the National Capital Territory, it acts as the “green lungs" of the city. It shields Delhi from hot desert winds, supports rich biodiversity and separates the Indus and Gangetic plains.
