SANDAKAN: The Car Boot Sale Night Markets programme in Sandakan city centre is seen as a new approach to revitalising economic activities in the area.
President of the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS), Datuk Walter Kenson, said, the initiative, in particular, provides opportunities for local traders and youths to explore a more relaxed, creative and flexible business concept, while offering an alternative attraction beyond the satellite commercial areas in the district.
He added, the concept could also provide youth with opportunities to generate income by utilising their existing vehicles, goods and products.
The initiative could also attract more visitors, including tourists from outside the district.
He said this during a press conference after launching the Car Boot Sale Night Markets organised by the Persatuan Dokumentari &Filem Sandakan at Lorong Harbour Square, next to The Elopura Hotel, Sandakan, on Saturday.
Among present were the association’s chairman, Datuk Md Afendi Hamdan, Datuk Ivy Wong, Sandakan Immigration Department Chief, Tajul Aripin Mohammed Mokhtar, a representative from Ormond Hotel and other invited guests.
A total of 20 lots have been made available for the Car Boot Sale, which will be held every Saturday from September 5, 2026, from 4pm to midnight.
Walter expressed hope that the programme would achieve its objectives, while welcoming similar initiatives and other ideas to further enliven Sandakan city.
The Car Boot Sale is also seen as a new experiment in Sandakan city centre, providing another avenue for the area to regain its vibrancy—not only during festive seasons but throughout the year.
Meanwhile, he also invited Sandakan city centre shop owners and members of the public to attend the MPS Town Hall Programme on August 27, starting at 8am at the Sandakan Community Hall, to discuss the economic development of the district.
Earlier, Afendi said the idea of organising the Car Boot Sale was initiated with the aim of bringing Sandakan city back to life, particularly its night-time atmosphere.
He said the programme was also expected to provide opportunities for youths and traders to showcase unique products, including food and beverages as well as various goods, while generating additional income.
He also expressed his appreciation to Walter for his continued attention towards efforts to revitalise Sandakan city centre, including initiatives such as this programme and other ongoing plans.
