A Singapore Airlines (SIA) relief flight successfully transported 143 passengers from the ill-fated SQ321 flight to Singapore this morning. The flight was forced to make an emergency landing in Bangkok after encountering severe turbulence.

SIA CEO Goh Choon Phon shared a video message confirming that the relief flight also carried crew members who were fit to travel, safely arriving in Singapore at 5:05 AM.

However, 79 passengers and six crew members remain in Bangkok. These include individuals receiving medical care and their family members.

SIA promptly dispatched a team to Bangkok following the emergency landing of SQ321 at Suvarnabhumi Airport. The incident occurred about 10 hours into the flight from London, as the Boeing 777-300ER experienced severe turbulence over the Irrawaddy Basin, plummeting 6,000 feet in five minutes from its cruising altitude of 37,000 feet. There were 211 passengers and 18 crew members on board, including 16 Malaysians.

Tragically, a 73-year-old British passenger lost his life during the flight. Over 70 others sustained injuries, with many suffering head injuries from being thrown around during the turbulence.

"The pilot declared a medical emergency and diverted the plane to Bangkok, landing at 3:45 PM local time," Goh explained in his video statement, posted on SIA’s social media platforms.

In his message, Goh expressed deep sorrow over the incident, offering condolences to the family of the deceased and apologies to all passengers affected by the harrowing ordeal.

"On behalf of SIA, I express my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. We are deeply sorry for the traumatic experience that everyone on board SQ321 endured. Our primary concern is to provide all possible assistance to passengers and crew," Goh stated.

Goh reassured those affected that SIA is committed to offering support during this challenging time. He also provided contact numbers for relatives of passengers seeking information: +65-6542-3311 (Singapore), 1800-845-313 (Australia), and 080-0066-8194 (United Kingdom).

A Grim Incident at 37,000 Feet

The SQ321 flight, which was headed from London to Singapore, faced a life-threatening situation as it cruised over the Irrawaddy Basin. The turbulence struck suddenly, causing the aircraft to lose altitude rapidly. The intense shaking and sudden drop threw passengers and crew members into the air, leading to numerous injuries.

Among the passengers were 16 Malaysians, who, along with others, experienced sheer terror as the plane descended sharply. The situation became critical when it was confirmed that a British passenger had died, adding to the gravity of the incident.

Immediate Response and Continued Support

SIA's swift response included dispatching a team to Bangkok and arranging a relief flight for those able to travel. The affected passengers and crew members who could not make the journey back to Singapore immediately are receiving medical treatment and support.

Goh's video message underscored the airline's commitment to safety and care. He promised continuous support for all passengers and crew members, acknowledging the fear and distress caused by the unexpected turbulence.

What Lies Ahead

As investigations into the incident proceed, SIA is focused on supporting those affected and ensuring the safety of its future flights. The airline’s emergency response team remains active in Bangkok, aiding passengers and crew members still in the city.

Goh’s message to the public was clear: SIA is dedicated to assisting everyone involved in this tragic event, offering condolences, apologies, and assurance of their commitment to safety and care.

In the wake of this terrifying event, Singapore Airlines is doing everything possible to support and comfort their passengers, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to passenger safety and wellbeing.
